EC motor or AC motor: what's the difference and which do you choose?

When looking for an industrial fan, you’ll inevitably face the choice: EC motor or AC motor? Both technologies work, but they suit different situations. In this article we compare them on the points that matter most in practice.

How does an AC motor work?

An AC motor (alternating current motor) is the classic, proven technology. The motor runs at grid frequency (50 Hz) and therefore has a (nearly) fixed speed. Simple, robust and field-tested. Drawback: without a frequency inverter you can’t adjust the speed, which often means the motor works harder than necessary.

How does an EC motor work?

An EC motor (Electronically Commutated) combines a brushless DC motor with integrated control electronics. The motor self-regulates and adjusts its speed steplessly based on the control signal. No external VFD required, and efficiency remains high, even at part load.

Comparison: EC vs. AC

  • Energy consumption: EC is significantly more efficient, especially at part load (up to 50% energy savings)
  • Speed control: EC offers stepless speed control without additional equipment; AC requires a separate frequency inverter
  • Purchase price: AC is less expensive upfront; EC has a higher initial cost but lower operating costs over its lifetime
  • Maintenance: EC has fewer wear parts (no carbon brushes), resulting in lower maintenance requirements
  • Noise: EC is generally quieter thanks to its precise speed control and the absence of carbon brushes
  • Complexity: AC is simpler to install; EC requires knowledge of control protocols
  • ErP compliance: EC performs better in terms of energy efficiency and is better aligned with increasingly stringent ErP requirements

When to choose AC?

An AC fan remains a good choice when: the fan always runs at full capacity, investment must be minimised, installation is simple with no speed control requirement, and the environment is extremely demanding (e.g. ATEX, high temperatures).

When to choose EC?

An EC fan is the better choice when: speed needs to be adjusted to demand, energy costs are a factor, quiet operation is desired, you want a modern installation that meets ErP requirements, or the fan is integrated into a building management system (BMS).

What we recommend

For most new projects and retrofits, we recommend EC technology. Payback periods in practice are typically 2 to 4 years, after which the energy savings deliver structural benefit. For specific applications where AC is a better fit, we supply that technology too.
