The popularity of EC fans is mainly due to their combination of energy efficiency and controllability. Unlike traditional AC fans, which often operate at a fixed speed, EC fans can be continuously adjusted to match the actual demand.

Where are EC fans most commonly used?

EC fans are primarily used in systems where airflow demand changes regularly and energy efficiency is an important consideration. Typical examples include installations that need to respond to varying occupancy levels, temperature, cooling demand, or production conditions throughout the day.

Because the fan speed can be continuously adjusted, the fan only delivers the capacity required at any given moment. This makes EC technology particularly suitable for applications where systems operate at partial load for a large portion of the time.

Depending on the application, various types of EC fans are available, including axial fans, centrifugal fans, and box fans.

In practice, EC fans are commonly used in:

  • Air handling units (AHUs)
  • Refrigeration systems and condensers
  • Production facilities and commercial buildings
  • Data centres and server rooms
  • Electrical cabinets and control panels
  • OEM machinery and equipment

 

These applications all have one important characteristic in common: the fan handles air at or near ambient temperature. In environments with very high temperatures, such as furnaces, drying systems, or smoke extraction applications, other fan technologies specifically designed for these operating conditions are generally the preferred choice.

Air Handling Units (AHUs)

Air handling units are among the most common applications for EC fans. In these systems, outdoor air or recirculated air is moved through filters, heating coils, cooling coils or humidification systems.

Because airflow requirements vary throughout the day, controllable fans are an ideal solution. EC fans can easily be connected to CO₂ sensors, temperature sensors or occupancy controls, allowing airflow to be automatically adjusted to actual demand.

As a result, many modern AHUs are equipped with EC fans as standard.

Cooling electrical enclosures and control cabinets is another common application for EC fans.

Heat generated by drives, power supplies and other electrical components must be removed efficiently to prevent overheating and premature component failure.

Process ventilation at low temperatures

Not all industrial process ventilation involves high temperatures. Many processes operate with air temperatures close to ambient conditions.

As long as the air temperature remains within the permitted operating limits of the motor and electronics, EC fans can provide an efficient and reliable solution.

When is an EC fan not the right choice?

Although EC fans offer many advantages, there are situations where another solution is a better fit.

A standard EC fan is generally not suitable for:

  • High process temperatures
  • Industrial furnaces
  • High-temperature drying systems
  • Flue gas extraction
  • Smoke and heat exhaust applications in accordance with EN 12101-3
  • Hazardous areas requiring ATEX certification
  • Applications where the electronics are exposed to extreme temperatures

 

The exact temperature limits vary depending on the manufacturer and fan design. In addition, standard EC fans are not ATEX-certified and are therefore not suitable for use in hazardous (explosive) atmospheres. Always check the product specifications of the selected fan and the requirements of your application before making your choice.

For high-temperature applications, specially designed high-temperature fans or fans with an externally mounted motor are often the preferred solution. For hazardous areas, ATEX-certified fans are required.
