Everything you need to know about ATEX fans

When working in a potentially explosive atmosphere, a standard fan simply won’t do. An ATEX fan provides the safety and reliability required in these critical environments.
On this page, we explain what an ATEX fan is, when you need one, and what to consider when selecting the right model.

Whether you’re in the chemical industry, food processing, or a workshop with combustible fumes or dust particles, proper ventilation is crucial for the safety of people, equipment, and the environment.

What is an ATEX fan?

An ATEX fan is specifically developed for use in ATEX zones – areas where explosive gas, vapor, or dust mixtures may be present. These fans are built using spark-proof materials, include thermal protection, and are designed to operate safely under all conditions.

Typical applications include:

  • Storage tanks with flammable liquids
  • Rooms where chemical vapors are released
  • Installations at risk of dust explosions, such as silos or grain storage

When do you deed an explosion-proof fan?

If you work with flammable substances in an enclosed space, there’s a risk that air and particles may form an explosive atmosphere. In such cases, you’re legally required to use explosion-proof equipment – including an ATEX-certified fan.

What is an ATEX certificate?

Every ATEX fan must come with a valid ATEX certificate. This document confirms that the product complies with the ATEX directive and is suitable for a specific zone (e.g. Gas Zone 1 and 2 or Dust Zone 21 and 22).

It’s not just a legal requirement – it’s your guarantee of safety.

Frequently asked questions about ATEX fans

What does ATEX mean?

ATEX stands for “ATmosphères EXplosibles” and refers to European regulations for equipment and safety systems used in potentially explosive environments.

Zones 1 and 2 are classified for gas explosion risks. Zones 21 and 22 refer to dust explosion hazards. Zones 1 and 21 indicate regular presence of explosive atmospheres, while Zones 2 and 22 are less frequent but still require ATEX-certified equipment. In addition, for Dust Zone 21, a vibration monitor must be installed on the fan.

Yes, some ATEX fans are suitable for outdoor use, provided they have the correct IP rating and are protected against rain, dirt, or extreme temperatures.

It depends on your airflow requirements, duct length, pressure buildup, and available space. Our advisors will gladly help you select the right type based on your setup.

Yes, all our ATEX fans include the required ATEX certificate, user manual, and technical specifications – essential for inspections and compliance checks.
